Flooding in Lopen

Some parts of Lopen have long been vulnerable to flooding, but while in the past this has mainly been limited to roads and fields, severe weather events in December 2023 and January 2025 led to interior flooding of several homes and industrial units, causing severe damage and upset.  Some have now been flooded twice.  The purpose of the Flood Group is to explore the reasons for the flooding beyond the increasingly severe weather events brought by climate change  and what can be done to mitigate them and protect vulnerable properties.

The first Flood Group meeting on 17th July brought gather representatives from the parishes of Lopen, The Seavingtons, Hinton St George, Dinnington and Allowenshay, including householders affected by flooding, those concerned they could be in the future, farmers and landowners whose land both contributes to and suffers from the affects of flooding as well as those just interested in ways to mitigate the general disruption.

The meeting was driven by Lisa Wilson of Lopen in collaboration with FWAG with additional valuable input from the SRA.
