About Lopen

A small village with a long history

  • Facebook

The Village of Lopen, is a quiet hamlet of c.117 properties, including numerous farms, a farm shop and an Indian Restaurant within walking distance of the main village hub.

The village can be found just off the main A303 trunk road, west of Yeovil between South Petherton to the north and Crewkerne to the south. It lies within the Yeovil Scarplands which sweep in and arc from the Mendip Hills around the southern edge of Somerset Levels and Moors to the edge of the Blackdowns.

Lopen nestles in one of the most fertile valleys of agricultural land in the county, within fields that still feature their medieval strip patterns and is just 20 miles from the famous Jurassic coast of Dorset. Read more about the local geography and landscape.

Many of the houses and cottages are built from local, mellow hamstone, and some central parts of the village form a designated conservation area, which includes All Saints Church and Sunday School Room.

Between Lopenhead, the northern most part of the village, and the central village, the road crosses the ancient Roman Fosse Way, which is now just a minor country lane.

The Romans were very active throughout this area, building villas and operating successfully along what was then a major trade route. See the History of Lopen page for more information.

Today, Lopen provides local employment with businesses ranging from traditional farming to timber merchants, leisure services and adventure holidays, to specialist restoration services and probiotic manufacturing.

Our small community is active and friendly. There are regular meetings of a Women’s group, a History group, regular coffee mornings and village suppers, picnics and fayres, where the turnout is always excellent. Find out more about Lopen Community Groups (see navigation panel).
